This guide will offer some general advice followed by some examples of situations you may find yourself in, however be warned, this is purely an introduction as the split second decision making nature of combat squad leading in the more hectic fights is very closely tied to your experience as a squad leader and is best learned out on the battlefield. Within MoX we will often open our squads as primarily a recruitment tool, and also to increase our numerical impact upon the battlefield (If you play on Miller come join us!).
Leading a public platoon is one of the most challenging and exhausting roles in Planetside 2. It is a task that sees you trying to mould a group of unknown individuals into an effective fighting force. Success is demanded, and good administrative skills are required, as is an ability to read and predict the flow of battle.
(This guide is written in the assumption that you have at least 4-5 outfit members online and playing alongside you in the platoon, If you are leading on your own (very brave) some aspects of this guide may not apply) Continue reading
Facilitating the zerg.
Please note this guide is written from the perspective of the squad / platoon leader of a smaller outfit capable of filling 1-2 squads. If you can field a full platoon or more then the ideas contained within may be less relevant as you may have the numbers to approach the objectives directly and not have to rely on allies to help achieve your objectives.
So you have found yourself and your outfit embroiled in a huge battle with numbers of players on each side. Two zergs have collided and little headway is made on either side as more and more bodies are thrown into the grinder. As a member of an organised outfit you may find that acting in an intelligent manner can allow you to tip the battle in your favour even when you are only running a single squad. Continue reading
Alfie is a three year old gamer who loves to drive his truck (Sunderer) around VR training. He is a happy member of the NC on Miller and always wants to be the blue man. So now it is straight over to Alfie (with some editing). Continue reading
Being forced back in the face of a numerically superior force can suck, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. With a little forethought and timing your squad can retain the initiative and be victorious even when an enemy zerg is bearing down upon you. Continue reading
To understand the zerg and eventually counter it we must first deduce what it actually is and how it is likely to behave.
To me the term zerg can refer to any large offensively minded concentration of troops
Fortunately it will tend to follow a series of rules. Continue reading
Planetside2 can be an awkward beast for the leader of a small squad, especially when you consider that you are a 12 man drop in a battle containing potentially hundreds of individuals on each side. With the introduction of a Lattice system on Indar funneling players into predictable locations many people have loudly complained that there is nothing for their small squads and outfits to accomplish.
My character in Planetside 2 is PirateCat, and I play most often as a medic and regularly as a squad leader for MoX fighting for the Terran Republic on the Miller Server. A veteran outfit from Planetside 1 containing individuals from across the globe who are united by a desire to work together well as a unit fighting away from the zerg and defeating the enemy through superior training, tactics and cunning. We have developed a number of strategies to allow us, as a small outfit to not only survive, but thrive in an environment where numerical superiority is often considered the only way to win.
